DESCRIPTION:Straightforward Ultrasonic Debridement /HANDS-ON A Simplified Approach to Ultrasonic Instrumentation\nPresented by Ms. Cynthia Fong\, RDH\, MS \nStraightforward Ultrasonic Debridement\nThis course provides the fundamentals of ultrasonics that will enable clinicians to immediately incorporate ultrasonics in clinical practice for the purposes of complete periodontal debridement. It will begin with a discussion of the changes that have occurred in the treatment of periodontal disease and its impact on the use of power scalers and end with recommendations for appointment sequencing. Emphasis will be placed on differentiating between technologies and providing clinical recommendations\, including patient medical/dental considerations; equipment set up; and insert sterilization/replacement guidelines. Detailed instructions will be presented on the rationale for the use of a variety of inserts; instrumentation techniques and sequencing. \nHANDS-ON: A Simplified Approach to Ultrasonic Instrumentation\nThis hands-on workshop will begin with a discussion of the changes in the treatment of periodontal disease and its impact on the use of ultrasonics. Emphasis will be placed on detailing the fundamentals of ultrasonics (including differentiation between scaling equipment) with a focus on ultrasonic instrumentation for the purpose of gross ultrasonic debridement\, definite debridement and de-plaquing. Patient cases will be utilized to prescribe instrument selection\, sequencing and to assist in selecting the appropriate technology that will meet the individual needs of the patient. At the completion of this workshop\, the participant will gain the confidence and skills necessary to immediately incorporate the use of power scalers into clinical practice. \nPLEASE NOTE: Participants must complete the Straightforward Ultrasonic Debridement lecture prior to attending this hands-on workshop. \nMs. Cynthia Fong is a dental hygienist and a national and international speaker who presents continuing education courses and academic lectures on topics related to disease prevention and therapeutic oral care.  She is a graduate of Union College and Columbia University.  Previously she was a faculty member at the University of Medicine and Dentistry – New Jersey Dental School.  Ms. Fong has been a member of and has held several leadership positions with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the American Dental Education Association of Dental Schools.  Previously she served as a committee member of the American Dental Association National Board of Test Constructors in Dental Hygiene and as a Board of Director for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessment (formerly North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners). DESCRIPTION:HANDS ON-Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Administration Training\nPresented by Dr. Jeffrey Young \nAnxiety and pain are two of the main obstacles to the acceptance of dental care. Appropriate administration and use of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen can be a safe\, effective means to alleviate mild to moderate fear and anxiety. In addition\, it may diminish responses to pain and elevate pain threshold. \nThis course will provide an introduction to the pharmacology\, mechanism of action and effects of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen. The goals of anxiolysis\, including clinical applications\, indications\, advantages/disadvantages and biohazards of administration will be presented. The monitoring and recognition of potential complications will be discussed. \nA review of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen equipment and technique for safe administration will be presented followed by a demonstration of the administration and use of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen inhalation equipment in a dental clinic setting. Participants will then practice administration and monitoring using actual inhalation equipment. \nThis is a one-day course with approximately five (5) hours of classroom instruction followed by two (2) hours of clinical demonstration and practice. Review the basics of dental sleep medicine and the TMJ complex. Work your way through a comprehensive exam\, oral appliance selection and various bite techniques used commonly in the dental sleep field. Gain an understanding of common problems faced during treatment and the proper guidelines to keep dentists “in their lane” when going into the medical realm. \nObjectives: \n\nReview and understand the basics of dental sleep medicine\, including the science of dental sleep medicine and understanding sleep studies/what to look for.\nUnderstand the flow of a comprehensive dental sleep exam and practice this in small groups with the guidance of the supervising doctors.\nUnderstand and be able to take multiple bite techniques. This will also be practiced in small groups with guidance.\nUnderstand pitfalls and problems with oral appliance therapy that you will encounter. Learn techniques to handle these issues.\nUnderstand the different designs of oral appliances and when to use each.\nUnderstand the guidelines of dental sleep medicine to keep your patients and your practice within the scope of dental sleep medicine.\n\n\nDr. Chase Bennett graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Dentistry with special distinction. Under the direction of its distinguished program founder\, Dr. Noshir Mehta\, Dr. Bennett completed an externship at the renowned Craniofacial Pain Center at Tufts University School of Dentistry. He is the youngest dentist to have achieved Diplomate status in the fields of Craniofacial Pain and Sleep Disordered Breathing. Currently\, Dr. Bennett lectures nationally and is involved in various research projects on the topics of Craniofacial Pain and Sleep Disorders. He serves as Director of the Apnea & Breathing Clinic in San Diego\, CA. Dr. Bennett maintains a private practice in Arvada\, CO. \nDr. Terry Bennett graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1972 with a B.S. in Zoology. He then attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and graduated in 1977. Dr. Bennett started his private practice in Tulsa\, OK that same year. He soon developed an interest in treating patients with chronic head\, neck and facial pain disorders.
