DESCRIPTION:Straightforward Ultrasonic Debridement /HANDS-ON A Simplified Approach to Ultrasonic Instrumentation\nPresented by Ms. Cynthia Fong\, RDH\, MS \nStraightforward Ultrasonic Debridement\nThis course provides the fundamentals of ultrasonics that will enable clinicians to immediately incorporate ultrasonics in clinical practice for the purposes of complete periodontal debridement. It will begin with a discussion of the changes that have occurred in the treatment of periodontal disease and its impact on the use of power scalers and end with recommendations for appointment sequencing. Emphasis will be placed on differentiating between technologies and providing clinical recommendations\, including patient medical/dental considerations; equipment set up; and insert sterilization/replacement guidelines. Detailed instructions will be presented on the rationale for the use of a variety of inserts; instrumentation techniques and sequencing. \nHANDS-ON: A Simplified Approach to Ultrasonic Instrumentation\nThis hands-on workshop will begin with a discussion of the changes in the treatment of periodontal disease and its impact on the use of ultrasonics. Emphasis will be placed on detailing the fundamentals of ultrasonics (including differentiation between scaling equipment) with a focus on ultrasonic instrumentation for the purpose of gross ultrasonic debridement\, definite debridement and de-plaquing. Patient cases will be utilized to prescribe instrument selection\, sequencing and to assist in selecting the appropriate technology that will meet the individual needs of the patient. At the completion of this workshop\, the participant will gain the confidence and skills necessary to immediately incorporate the use of power scalers into clinical practice. \nPLEASE NOTE: Participants must complete the Straightforward Ultrasonic Debridement lecture prior to attending this hands-on workshop. \nMs. Cynthia Fong is a dental hygienist and a national and international speaker who presents continuing education courses and academic lectures on topics related to disease prevention and therapeutic oral care.  She is a graduate of Union College and Columbia University.  Previously she was a faculty member at the University of Medicine and Dentistry – New Jersey Dental School.  Ms. Fong has been a member of and has held several leadership positions with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the American Dental Education Association of Dental Schools.  Previously she served as a committee member of the American Dental Association National Board of Test Constructors in Dental Hygiene and as a Board of Director for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessment (formerly North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners). SUMMARY:MDDS Presents: HANDS ON-Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Administration Training
DESCRIPTION:HANDS ON-Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Administration Training\nPresented by Dr. Jeffrey Young \nAnxiety and pain are two of the main obstacles to the acceptance of dental care. Appropriate administration and use of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen can be a safe\, effective means to alleviate mild to moderate fear and anxiety. In addition\, it may diminish responses to pain and elevate pain threshold. \nThis course will provide an introduction to the pharmacology\, mechanism of action and effects of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen. The goals of anxiolysis\, including clinical applications\, indications\, advantages/disadvantages and biohazards of administration will be presented. The monitoring and recognition of potential complications will be discussed. \nA review of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen equipment and technique for safe administration will be presented followed by a demonstration of the administration and use of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen inhalation equipment in a dental clinic setting. Participants will then practice administration and monitoring using actual inhalation equipment. \nThis is a one-day course with approximately five (5) hours of classroom instruction followed by two (2) hours of clinical demonstration and practice. At the end of this course\, participants will clearly understand the indications for use of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen and be able to provide safe administration and monitoring. \nEducation Objectives \n\nDiscuss and understand the basic pharmacology and effects of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen\nReview the anesthesia continuum and the Colorado State Board of Dentistry regulations regarding the administration and monitoring of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen in the dental office\nKnow the goals of anxiolysis including advantages and disadvantages of inhalation administration\nDiscuss indications and contraindications for safe administration of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen\nUnderstand how to monitor patients and recognize potential complications of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen\nReview the inhalation equipment used for administration of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen in dental offices\nBecome proficient in administration and monitoring of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen by practicing with inhalation equipment in a clinical setting\n\nDr. Jeffrey Young earned his DDS from the University of Iowa and is a retired Army Colonel. Parking in these garages is available on a first-come\, first-served basis. **If you are attending a large course/event at the MWDI\, we recommend arriving early in case the garages fill and alternative parking must be secured. Be aware – the garages come up quickly after you cross 9th Avenue and both have left lane entrances. All numbered spaces within both retail parking garages (without “Reserved” signs) are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Do not park in any spaces with a red sign that says “Matrix” or “KCNC.” Do not park in the residential parking. Residential garages are at the back of the retail garages.
