Behind the Mic: How Interviewing Dental Leaders Has Reshaped My Outlook on the Profession

By: Dr. Arnelle Wright

If you had told me years ago that one day I’d become a voice of dentistry—literally speaking into a mic, podcasting to thousands and sitting across from industry titans—I’m not sure I would have believed you. But today, that’s exactly where I find myself. Through my growing online presence as The Daily Dentist on Instagram and as a co-host of the Dental Sound Bites podcast of the American Dental Association (ADA), I’ve had the unique privilege of interviewing some of the brightest minds and boldest trailblazers in our profession.

These conversations have been more than just informative; they’ve been transformative. Every time I sit down with a guest, I walk away not just with new knowledge, but with a renewed perspective on what dentistry is really about, where it’s headed and maybe even where we’ve lagged. In dental school, we’re trained to diagnose, drill, restore, extract and restore again. But as I’ve grown into this role as a communicator and community builder, I now understand that the health of our profession depends just as much on our ability to connect, share, and elevate the profession simply through an exchange of resources, knowledge and conversations beyond the operatory.

Whether it’s a seasoned private practice owner, a corporate executive, an advocate for community water fluoridation, or a wellness ambassador, interviewing such leaders has broadened my lens. I have a deep appreciation for the reality that dentistry is no longer a singular path, nor has it ever been. It’s a landscape rich with possibility. Clinical excellence remains foundational, yes, but thought leadership, entrepreneurship, advocacy, and influence are no longer side streets—they’re main roads that many of us are now on
traveling simultaneously.

Across all the interviews, one pattern stands out: the most impactful leaders don’t just do dentistry, they lead it. They think critically about our systems. They speak boldly about what’s broken and what’s next. And most importantly, they are unafraid to show up authentically.

These conversations have reminded me of the significance of thought leadership, and that it isn’t about having the most followers or speaking at the biggest conferences—it’s about service. It’s about saying the thing that needs to be said, asking the questions others are afraid to ask, and using your voice to amplify change, not just echo trends.

Now, the mic does have a way of humbling you. When you’re sitting down with someone whose story could fill volumes, you learn to listen deeply. You learn to ask better questions. You learn that your value as a host and as a fellow leader isn’t in always having the answer, but in facilitating space where others can speak truth that moves us all forward.

This has reshaped how I show up clinically, too. I no longer see myself just as a provider. I see myself as a curator of experiences. Whether I’m creating content online, educating patients in my practice, or advocating on behalf of our profession at large, I now approach every platform with intention, clarity and care.

A CALL TO RISING VOICES
If you’re a dentist who’s been feeling the tug to do something “more”—whether it’s launching a podcast, writing a column, building a brand, or mentoring others—consider this your nudge.

Your voice is needed. Not in some far-off future, but now.

We need more voices of dentistry, more leaders who are willing to step out from behind the mask, onto the mic, and into the sometimes messy but meaningful conversations that shape our profession’s future. I’m proof that you don’t have to have it all figured out to get started. You just need to care deeply, show up consistently and speak from the truth of your experience. Because when we use our voices with purpose, we don’t just build platforms, we build legacy.
